Overseas study tour

Expedition to Bali - an eye-opener

            5B Chan Sin Tung

The field trip to Bali is an unforgettable not have had the chance of feeding sharks. I would
experience to me. It is not quite the same as expected not have owned a baby sea turtle, and the list
but it is certainly a precious learning chance. Other goes on. What I have learnt in this field study is
than visiting some famous tourist spots, we also paid unparalleled by reading textbooks or Googling.
some untraditional visits. Although the trip was fi lled
with challenges and the schedule was tight, what I The most profound lesson I've learnt from the
have gained is invaluable. I would say if not for this trip is that humans have to respect the nature. Bali is
trip, I would never have attempted volcano climbing blessed with plenty of geographical resources. Rarely
and hence enjoyed the stunning view on top of could we find a place that boasts so many natural
Mount Batur. I would not have seen the magnifi cent wonders and lovely wild animals. However, this
caldera and crater lake with my bare eyes. I would paradise has been blemished by the surge of tourists,
who bring money, as well as pollution, to the island. Everyone is stunned by the magifi cent view at the top of
The sky becomes dimmer, the sea is full of plastic Mount Batur
bags and rubbish and the plants are stepped on by
oblivious passers-by. The nature is at the mercy of
humans. The most heart-breaking of all is that many
sea turtles have died due to being entangled in plastic
bags. The population of sea turtles has plummeted in
recent years and so as sharks. It seems that no matter
how much the green groups have done, humans keep
on destroying. Obviously all of us need to refl ect on
ourselves. As tourists, we can help by supporting
eco-tourism and sustainable tourism. Let's join
                                                              hands to save our planet!

It was my fi rst time to join a fi eld trip to a foreign
country organized by the school. I am glad about
my decision to join the tour as it turned out to be an
                                                             unforgettable experience.

Once I arrived at Bali Airport, I was already under
the impression that Bali was a more amiable place
than Hong Kong. In contrast to the modern design of
Hong Kong International Airport, Bali Airport looked
traditional with much greenery which made me feel
comfortable. Also, people in Bali were really nice as
they always greeted you with a smile. Their lifestyle
was different from ours too. Their pace of living was
much slower, which I enjoyed very much. I would like
Walking through the beautiful terraced fi elds
to stay in Bali for a longer time if I could!
Mount Batur, a volcano with a height of 1717 metres, is the place I like most. We cannot fi nd a volcano
in Hong Kong, let alone such a grand one. Climbing Mount Batur was tiring but I thought I would absolutely
regret if I did not give it a try. The scenery on the top of the volcano is simply stunning. Feeling that
everything was under me, I was submerged in a satisfaction that was unparalleled. Exploring the forest

In this trip, I tried a lot of things that couldn't have been done in
Hong Kong such as experiencing the Ubud culture and visiting the
Tegallalang Rice Terraces and Mount Batur, enriching my knowledge in
different domains such as biology and geography. After all, what's better
than learning by reading? By experiencing, of course.

Wa are going to return this lovely turtle to the sea Enjoying the starry night together with our dear classmates
