4. Funded Research Projects
Brief Introduction:
This research aims to explore whether and how people of different cultural
backgrounds value the concept of informed choice in antenatal screening for
genetic disorders. As a continuation of our previous project conducted in the
United Kingdom with individuals of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
(British White, Chinese, Pakistani, Caribbean and African - Ahmed et al.,2012),
this project will enhance our understanding on the topic by conducting the study
with local populations in multi-national/regional locations, including Pakistan,
Hong Kong, China’s Shanghai and Guizhou Province. The investigators will use Q
methodology -- a unique combination of qualitative and quantitative research
techniques -- to explore (1) whether women “value” choices within the context of
antenatal genetic screening, and (2) whether these values are different in people
from different cultures. The study will contribute to inform policy and service
development, not only in relation to antenatal screening programmes, but also
for other areas of healthcare, such as cultural sensitivity and health ethics. The
research result will be used to inform healthcare providers about patients’ values
of “informed choices”, which would enable better doctor-patient communication,
and enhance quality of care, equity of access, and uptake of services.
