School Extension Keeping Abreast of the New Era
Kiangsu Chekiang And Shanghai Residents (Hong Kong) Association has all along attached
great importance to education. The then Chairman of the Association, Dr. Hsu Chi Liang
pointed out, “My fellow countrymen know that humans’ progress hinges on quality education,
so we are dedicated to nurturing the next generation with quality education”. His vision in
education was also echoed by the former Chairman, Mr. Chow Pai Ying Stephen, “Talents are
priceless treasure and quality education is the cradle for nurturing talents”.
Since the founding of Kiangsu-Chekiang College (Shatin), the Association has been allocating
funds to improve school facilities and enhance quality of teaching. Projects include the
installation and renovation of a lift in the school building and an air conditioning system in the
school hall, raising funds for setting up the Chen Kwang Pu Library, the expansion of library
collection, the establishment of a gymnasium as well as the installation of computers and
LCD projectors in the classrooms. Scholarships have also been set up by the Association and
funding is provided for our employment of additional native English-speaking teachers. Since
early 1990s, annual exchange tours to Kiangsu and Chekiang Provinces have been organized
by the Association for both teachers and students. Under the School Improvement Project
Scheme implemented by the government in 1996, the school facilities were further upgraded
by the addition of a storey, an extra lift and two extra rooms on the ground floor. Over the
YEARS OF EXCELLENCE years, our school has successfully applied for grants totalling more than HK$6 million from
the Quality Education Fund for the implementation of 21 projects in the areas of effective
learning, school-based management, information technology, curriculum development and
integration, green campus, cultural exchange programmes, etc.
40 Despite the availability of additional facilities and resources, the shortage of learning and
teaching space had long been a problem faced by the school. The broadening of school
curriculum with the introduction of English Drama and Putonghua Drama, the implementation
of small-class teaching in language subjects, drama lessons, and Computer Literacy as well
as the provision of more than 200 elective subject combinations and the launching of Other
Learning Experiences upon the implementation of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum in
2009 further aggravated the classroom shortage problem.
To promote the sustainable development of the school and adhere to its commitment to Hong
Kong education, the Association and the then School Management Committee embarked on
the School Extension Project in 2011. Thanks to the support of Mr. Chow Pai Ying Stephen
and the generosity of Association members, HK$70 million was financed to construct a 6-storey
academic complex, comprising a construction floor area of 2,000 square metres.
To support the school extension, parents, alumni, teachers and students joined together to
make donations and stage the Walkathon and Carnival for the School Extension Project as
well as ‘Build a Better Campus Collaboratively’ Fundraising Dinner to raise funds for the
procurement of equipment to be installed in the new school building.
