          My love of languages

        Pauline CHOW Lo Sai

I love languages both Chinese and English. I can endure the wordiest
explanations. I read labels, posters and signs carefully as though I were
        proofreading documents.

Some words I came across stay in my mind for a long time. I learnt the word
“meadow” when I read Heidi at the age of ten. Then there is “negotiate” used to
describe how an old man walks up the stairs.

My interest in languages is not limited to text alone. Thanks to YouTube, we can easily re-live those historic moments
        listening to inspiring speeches.

I keep reminding my students that language profi ciency is not just for university admission but for life and so language
practice should not be merely limited to examination drills when after all, that is so boring.

Whenever I am interviewed on the tips to learn English, I would simply say – use it and live it! Language is living and
growing every day. Some like to put the blame on the lack of language environment. If that is indeed the case, create
one for yourselves. With the internet going rampant and communication devices getting inexpensive, there is absolutely
no difficulty in surrounding yourselves in an English-rich world if you so desire! That is exactly what I do. I read in
English. I watch and listen to the English television and radio channels. I walk up to Western-looking tourists just to
have another chance to speak in English! I correct my mistakes whether in writing or in speaking whenever I realize I
        am wrong.

My love of languages grows by the day. In fact, I have a dream - to learn one more language! Which one? Not sure yet!
        French? Maybe!
