       Fun Lear ning English

Some educationalists suggest that children can learn a
foreign language better through playing. Apart from the existing
classroom activities which help children to read, write, listen
and speak, we have also engaged our students in learning
English through extra-curricular activities and during post-lesson
       activities.
In extra-curricular activities, we include language games,
singing, cookery and board games to help students use and
practise English. For example, lower primary students love to
play “I See, I Spy”. It is a guessing game in which they have
to guess what object his or her classmate has spotted in the
classroom. It is a game which gives them the opportunity to
recall colour words and classroom objects they have previously
learnt. Another game they love is “Simon Says”. This is a game
in which students can practise the vocabulary of body parts.
Singing English songs is a popular and enjoyable activity that
immerses our students in practising and using the language.
Doing actions to accompany songs helps to reinforce their “We’re the winners.”
       learning.
Many schools do not allow students to make food. Our
school encourages our upper primary students to cook and have fun learning English
during cookery lessons. Students have to follow written and oral instructions carefully
in order to complete a dish. This is also a valuable life skill. Playing board games is
another one of our students’ favourite activities. These games can help to stimulate
students’ mind and challenge their lexical competence.
This year we also have a drama group as a post-lesson activity. Students like
to immerse themselves in the different character roles in the play. They use different
voices to portray different people. Drama in English helps students to develop strong
conversational skills in such a context that it greatly builds up their confidence in
       speaking.
All of these fun activities allow our students to practise vocabulary, grammar
and fluency in English in an authentic, friendly, supportive, relaxed and safe
environment. They are motivated to speak and express themselves in English. After
all, students should have fun while learning! Here are some photos which captured
students’ laughter and excitement during some of the activities.

                                Simon says, “Stretch your arms.”
