I went to my homeland Huizhou last What is truly unbelievable about this
summer with my family for a vacation. tour guide is his generosity in sharing his
What remains unforgettable to me is my strategies in the Chinese Maths Olympian
acquaintance with the tour guide who Competition with me when he learnt that
was only a few years older than me. His I had been a contestant. Even my local
profound outlook on life and generosity buddies reject sharing and we all fight our
in sharing his strategies for an academic lonely battles. Later, I asked him why he did
competition has left a lasting impression and not mind if I won over his peer. His reply
admiration which continues to motivate me changed my view of knowledge. He said,
now even though we are more than 100 km “Only when knowledge is shared can it
apart. be tested thoroughly, and when it is tested

The first day of the vacation was like thoroughly, we get closer to the truth and
any other vacation which was nothing more this helps us unlock more knowledge to deal
than food and photo-taking and would be with what we cannot handle now.”
forgotten even before the trip ended. Then
on the second day of the trip when we went
hiking, birdwatching and making tofu, a
young tour guide quickly won me over as he
kept talking about Maths concepts in almost
everything that day. Being a regular Maths
Olympian contestant myself, I was naturally
drawn to him and listened intently.

He shared how the villagers estimated
the bird population through different bird
chirps and follow up. Later when we were
put into teams to make tofu, his acute
understanding of tofu making and Maths
also helped our team win with ease. When
the tofu failed to coagulate, he commanded
us to adjust the amount of water, the water
temperature and even the salt and our tofu
was the first to curd that day. Later, when
we tasted the tofu made by different teams,
ours was the softest and had an admirable
taste. Never had I realised Maths could be
this ‘yummy’ before, which has motivated
me to dig deeper into Maths. I was so fond
of this tour guide that I called him ‘my big
         brother’.
