Fashion Design Competition - Flavors of Life
5C Wong Chui Shan
The annual Fashion Design Competition organized by Art Club has always
been the talk of the school. Designers look forward to showcasing their talents
in fashion design and models hope to stun the spectators with their remarkable
costumes. The competition this year, with the theme of ‘Flavors of Life’, saw
nine groups of students, comprising new faces who wanted to have a taste and
veterans who strove for excellence, battle for the title of fashion queen or king.
Just imagine if someone asked you, ‘What is the flavor of your life?’,
how would you answer? Sweet? Bitter? Sour? Or the mixture of all? In the
competition, every group expressed their understanding of fl avors of life through
the innovative use of colors and cutting of clothes. Some groups made use of dull
and cool colors with decorations like chains and ribbons to express the sorrow
and pain of life. The famous quote of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, ‘Man is born free,
and everywhere he is in chains’ popped in my mind when seeing this design.
Meanwhile, the designs of quite a few groups featured dazzling colors but
simple elements. Sparkling sequins, amphiboles and LED lights glittered under
the spotlight, demonstrating the designers’ intention to show the colorful side of
life.
The 2nd runner-up was Group 8, who presented a simple and bland life that
most people are having. But how could simplicity stand out from all the splendid
designs? Painting the pair of shorts with galaxy-like patterns and adorning them
with sprinkling fl ash powders, the designer wanted to tell how complicated and
challenging life could be. The top, on the other hand, was designed in all white
except an ink mark, reminding us that we should not overlook the happiness Group 6, the 1st runner-up, came up with the groundbreaking idea of
surrounding us just because of a little dot of pain. On the back, there were wings designing a gorgeous evening dress pasted with banknotes, with black and gold
made of magazines and denim, implying that we should bravely chase our as the main colours, embodying the prevalence of materialism and consumerism
dreams. in the modern society. Then the model untied the ribbon and revealed the
dress inside, which awed all of the audience. The long lavender evening dress,
decorated with chiffon and papers on which people's dreams were written,
reminded us to keep our pure heart though living in a world of luxury and
dissipation. Such outstanding idea and daring design successfully impressed the
judges.
Group 4, who used ‘family’ as the theme of their design, was the fashion
queen. Their design was not as special as that of Group 8, or as sumptuous as
that of Group 6. They only expressed one simple idea - maternal love. The
dress was made of white cloth and newspapers, which are ordinary or even
perceived as waste by some. Yet, the designer turned them into wonders. Group
4 impressed the judges and audience most with their exclusive idea of showing
familial love that everyone has experienced through fashion. Maybe the fl avor of
soups by mother is not the most delicious, but it must be the warmest and one-
of-a-kind.
Though we only had three groups winning, every model shone on the
runway. Finally, the show came to a perfect end among deafening applause
and participants' tears and laughter. Next year we shall see more striking and
impressive designs!
A dress made of white cloth and newspapers. Apart from being environmental-friendly,
it also showcases the purity of maternal love.
A design that satirizes the materialistic mind in modern society. Less is more ! Life does not always look spendid.
