While LEWI is essentially a research institute, in order to capitalise on our
academic strength and further develop our international networks, it is useful to
launch teaching programmes with explicit global and interdisciplinary emphases.
In light of our dwindling financial reserve, success in the launching of the Master
of Arts in Global Society Programme (MAGS) in conjunction with the Faculty of
Social Sciences was instrumental in ensuring the financial sustainability of the
Institute. In the year under review the Director of LEWI also served as the
Programme Director of MAGS and the Chairman of the Programme
Management Committee. Major efforts were made in programme promotion
exercises, including promotion campaigns held at Beijing, Shanghai and Zhuhai.
More than 80 prospectus students applied for the programme, and 20-plus
offers were made. For AY 2016-17, there were 10 students enrolled in the
MAGS programme – one half enrolled in the Global Cultures concentration and
the other half enrolled in the Global Political Economy concentration. While the
number is quite small, it is nevertheless gratifying that the programme finally
commences operation. Over time it is hoped that the enrolment will increase
considerably along with the building of the programme’s reputation.
In the year under review LEWI helped with the offering of the following courses
for the MAGS programme:
Dr. Dong Dong – “Global Cultural Industries”
Dr. Hao Pu – “Research Methods for Global Studies”
Dr. George Kam-wah Mak – “Globalizations”
