How we set up success in the classroom

            Catering for Learner Diversity

First and foremost, we are a department which caters for all of our students’ diverse needs. Our entire curriculum and examination
scope is centered around being able to support those who need it most, but also to challenge our most able students to bring out their
very best. This assistance, for both the most able and for those needing help, takes many forms, but includes specialised revision
packs and in-class quizzes, a tiered examination rubric, and additional study classes during the summer. All of these allow us to identify
and cater for individual learning needs with efficiency and effectiveness.

            The importance of reading

We consider interest in books a key factor of success, and so we have ensured that it plays a significant role in our curriculum. We
believe that sparking interest and a passion for reading is vital, and so our Junior Form students are provided with a weekly library
session as soon as they start at PESS. A range of fiction and non-fiction texts are hand-picked by teachers for each class, to ensure
suitability, as well as the challenge necessary for so many students.

With guidance from our teachers, our Extensive Reading Scheme provides students with a range of genres, morals and ideas to delight
and challenge. Examples of texts studied in Junior Forms include classics like Roald Dahl and Shakespeare. We guide our Senior
Forms to discover the biographies of inspirational figures throughout history.
