Rugby
In October 2017, SCOLAR and Hong Kong Rugby Union conducted a four-session rugby course for 30 primary
four students in our school. The aim was to teach students the basic knowledge of playing rugby, using
English as the medium of instruction. Students’ interest and confi dence in speaking and listening in this
English learning environment were greatly aroused. The playground was full of laughter and excitement.
Our students were waving and cheering for their teammates in each competition. Rugby is a team sport
which emphasizes teamwork, co-operation and respect. These are valuable skills for our students to learn,
both on and o the rugby fi eld. It was an awesome opportunity!

I’m very glad that I could join ‘Rugby English’. I love our coaches, Chris
and Abby. Chris comes from Canada and Abby is from New Zealand.
I love to play rugby games. I learnt what teamwork is. I also learnt many
English words. And of course, we learnt a lot of tactics and skills because
we had to read a chapter of the booklet in each session. It’s about rugby!
Lastly, I want to thank the coaches because they taught us so many
things. After taking part in this activity, my English is getting better and “We are the champions!”
I think I can run faster than before!

In October, I learnt how to play rugby. Before that I thought rugby was
boring, but now I think rugby is a good game. I like playing it now.
In the fi rst lesson, I didn’t know how to tackle someone or catch the ball.
Someone threw the ball at me. I couldn’t catch it and it hit my head.
In the second lesson, I learnt how to pass the ball and I also learnt how
to score a try. I ran very fast so no one could tackle me!
In the third lesson and the fourth lesson, I found out what the Hong
Kong Sevens is. I also know what “try line”, “a try”, “whistle”, “rugby
ball” and “touch” mean.
“Playing rugby, learning English!” I felt very excited to play rugby. I love playing rugby very much. It is
great and wonderful!

At School, I joined a rugby training course which was conducted in
English. I attended four lessons in total. I learned how to tackle. At
the same time, I learned how to avoid people who tackled me.
I learned how to get a "try" in rugby. This means you have to
carry the rugby ball to the try line and put the ball down to score
a point. I also made friends with teammates coming from other
classes. I really enjoyed our friendship.
I spoke lots of English and could communicate with our coaches
well. I think this is a very good activity to learn English. It was fun!
“Let's count, 123..."
“Say cheers!” “To be number 1.”
