What is Global Studies, 22 March 2017
Prof. Jan Nederveen Pieterse, Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp Distinguished
Professor of Global Studies and Sociology at University of California, Santa
Barbara, USA, presented a workshop on “What is Global Studies”.
The workshop distinguished three waves and layers of global knowledge. First,
data gathered by international institutions, governments and other agencies with
an interest in mapping transnational or global trends. Second, literature on
globalisation that developed particularly during nineties. Third, the emergence
of global studies as a field in the 21st century, which exists in the form of
improvisations, building plans and scaffolding. The latter part of the workshop
focused on the challenges of global cognition, particularly in multicentric and
multilevel thinking.
