Introduction
With the aim of facilitating the development of a ‘learning to read’ and ‘reading to learn’ culture, Primary Literacy
Programme-Reading and Writing (PLP-RW) and Task-based learning with different aspects are implemented in Key
Stage One (P.1-P.3) and Key Stage Two (P.4-P.6) in our school. A language-rich environment and diverse learning
experiences are also created so as to allow students to have more exposure to English and build up their confidence in
using English.
Key Stage One (P.1-P.3)
Primary Literacy Programme-Reading and
Writing (PLP-RW)
The programme adopts a holistic approach incorporating the four skills to the primary literacy programme, but still has an
emphasis on reading and writing.
In order to stimulate students’ interest in learning English, they are introduced to phonics, songs and chants and many
fun games with diverse teaching and learning activities. They are exposed to different high frequency words, a variety of
reading techniques and simple language structures.
It also promotes the use of Storytelling, Reading Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading and Independent Reading
among students. The use of Shared Writing, Guided Writing and Process Writing in the programme also enhances
students’ writing skills.
Key Stage 2 (P.4-P.6)
Task-based learning
The use of task-based approach is to allow students to use English with a meaningful purpose and in an authentic way.
Task activities are usually rich in language, involving a wide variety of language areas, as well as all the skills: reading,
writing, listening and speaking. The task is an activity in which students use language to achieve a specific outcome. The
activity is designed meaningfully and purposefully so as to encourage communication and interaction. Playing games,
solving problems, sharing information and experiences can all be considered as relevant and authentic tasks.
Extra-Curricular Activities
During the ECA period, students have lots of fun and they are given the opportunities to practise and build up their
confidence in speaking English.
This year, English Drama Club is established and it allows students to use English in a fun way. Students all enjoy acting
and it builds up students’ confidence in speaking.
