Chinese
The Chinese teachers are pleased with
the progress made by our students in their
Chinese studies throughout this school year
and their high level of engagement in Chinese
learning events, both in and out of school.
During Discovery Week in November 2018,
30 students from Years 9, 10 and 11 went to
Singapore, where the presence of Confucian
capitalism is often foregrounded and where
Chineseness has in large measure become
an engine of modernity. The many museums
and heritage sites the students visited
afforded immersive experiences and helped
them to construct meaningful connections to
historical narratives. The trip to the culturally
rich city-state went a long way towards
fostering the students’ commitment to cultural
awareness and global understanding.

In the 70 Hong Kong Schools Speech
Festival, two students were awarded
certificates of proficiency and ten
others won certificates of merit, with
Miranda Leung (8C) and Bernice Tan
(8L) chalking up two second runner-
up spots, one in F1-F2 Girls Solo
Prose and the other in Solo Verse.
In the Battle of the Books organised
by the English Department, students
competed in three rounds to demonstrate
their knowledge of Chinese culture and
their understanding of two literary works,
namely, Stories of the Sahara by San Mao
(1943-1991), and Fox Volant of the Snowy
Mountain, selected as a tribute to the
renowned martial arts novelist Jin Yong,
who died in October 2018. Students from
the four houses evinced great enthusiasm
for the contest, which they believed was an
unforgettable amalgam of independent and
collaborative learning, of academic rigor
and competitive conviviality.
We look forward to seeing more of our
students come into their own and become
confident, competent users of Chinese.
