Kimchi, Blackpink, Oppam and K-pop are a representation of South Korean culture among the world’s
general public, however, our South Korea study tour explored another side of the country. We gave our
students an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of Korea’s intellectual property.

From 14 to 18 April, 2019, STCC successfully held a study tour in the capital city of Korea, Seoul.
The tour targeted form four and five student participants with a basic understanding of career
planning and Liberal Studies. Its aim was to help facilitate the exploration of oversea study pathways
and enrich our students understanding of how globalisation is being influenced by South Korea.
On the tour, visits to prestigious universities such as Konkuk University, Ewha Womans University
and Kyung Hee University, equipped students with up-to-date information about studying in Korea.
The university representatives introduced the admission requirements for international students
and explained that the demand for foreign talents was high. To our student’s surprise, as an
entry requirement, applicants must attain a high level of Korean proficiency since the courses are
mostly conducted in Korean. In terms of the environment, the cherry blossoms around the campus
immediately appealed to our students.
Another highlight of our tour, which broadened our student’s learning horizons, was the visit to Mapo
Resource Recovery Facility. They learnt about how the country’s incinerators tackled their solid waste
problem. Touching on Liberal Studies and Science subjects, the visit trigged students to consider the
possibilities of using incinerators in Hong Kong. Furthermore, they experienced the latest technologies in
the futuristic Samsung D’light exhibition center and analysed how globalisation attributed to the growing
share of Samsung smartphones in Hong Kong’s local market.
It was a great pleasure to witness how students grew individually and intellectually. The tour absolutely
drew our student’s away from the K-pop culture.
