Chinese Debate Team

The establishment of the Chinese Debate Team aims to
promote critical thinking among students, encourage them
to express their arguments in an organised way and develop
basic research skills through regular training. This year, our
team had a total of 19 members, three supporting teachers
(Ms. Kinna Lee, Ms. Jasmine Li and Mr. Chung) and two
coaches (Ms. Helena and Ms. Anita). With the help from
the two coaches, we trained our members with structured
and knowledge-building activities. More importantly, we
held internal debates to give students opportunities to put
what they have learnt into practice and thus let them grow
together. In the coming year, we will encourage our students
to involve more in the local debating community by holding
different friendly matches with other schools.

During this year, I’ve learnt a lot of things about debating skills and improved a lot
comparing to last year’s performance. In each debate lesson, we had different practices
and I jot down some notes to help myself remember all the skills I learnt. There were
different simulation competitions for us to practise so that we could prepare well for the
real competitions. The things I learnt most in debate this year were the writing skills
and speaking skills. The teachers taught us different skills and word choices to write a
better script. They also reminded us the precautions in reading aloud the script during
the competitions. My favourite part in each lesson was the free debate session, because
during the free debate, we could share our points about a specific topic freely. At last, I
want to thank all the teachers who taught me this year in debate and I hope the debating
team can have more opportunities to join different debate competitions next year.
