Show, Don’t Tell
Task description
Based on a passage taken from an English worksheet from Primary 3, students are asked to modify it by
depicting the emotions of the characters with more details. Instead of telling the readers how the characters
feel, students should describe the facial expressions and other body language presented for certain emotions.
A Sad Story
4C Ng Chun Lam
Mr. and Mrs. Lee came home from a party very late one night. They were walking on a street covered with snow, so
they were shivering and their teeth were chattering. They were also yawning.
They went to their block and when they found that the lift was not working, Mr. Lee’s eyes were popping out and there
th
was steam coming out of his ears. They lived on the 954 floor, so they had to walk. “Ugh, stupid lift not working when
we’re so tired!” Mrs. Lee shouted and kicked the gate of the lift. They started to walk up the stairs. Mr. Lee suggested, “Let’s
tell each other funny stories to help us walk. I’ll start first.”
Mr. Lee began, “Once upon a time, there was a silly corgi and a dim-witted penguin who always giggle uncontrollably
whatever happens. One day, they set off to find a treasure chest in a forest. They were dripping in sweat when they walk.
When they found the treasure chest, their smiles were a mile wide and they giggled. Then, their stomachs were rumbling.
They ate some tree branches and leaves mixed with soil. A dog came over and gasped for air. “What’s wrong?” asked
Corgi. “Why are you eating these things? They’re gross! And there’s a restaurant over there!” said the dog. The corgi’s
and the penguin’s faces blushed red and ran away quickly. “That’s very funny!” applauded Mrs. Lee.
They told each other funny stories one after another and they didn’t feel tired.
th
When they reached the 939 floor, Mr. Lee said, “I’m afraid I have to tell you a story that makes your jaw drop. I have
left the door key in the car downstairs.”
