New Tales From The Mogao Caves
6A Fong Hon Pok Hobart
An oasis on the silk road That of breathtaking secrets
Lays the Mogao Caves The thousands of Buddhist architecture
The more paintings you see Filled with uniqueness
The more you crave
A Buddhist monk had a vision The clay statues constructed on a wooden frame
He had made a decision Then padded with reed
Got inspired Modelled in clay
And started building a cave And finished with paint
The glorious statues of the giant Buddha
A second monk joined the first monk However has a stone core
Then came another Often attended with mythical creatures
By the time of the Northern Liang Looking at them, you could never be bored
A community of monks was founded
They meditated Texts produced by a woodblock print
From day to night Like the oldest book
The sacred art and statues And other early images
What a beautiful sight There’s plenty more in store
Silk banners, altar hangings
A thousand years later Wrapping for manuscripts and more
Other routes the travellers took So many different textiles
Dunhuang Mogao Caves were forgotten
Becoming no more than a dusty legend …There’s just too much to explore
Scholar-explorers rediscovered
