How To Donate 1 Million Dollars

(Junior Section) 3C Thomas Chan King Lun

          Dear Aunt,
How are you? I haven’t seen you for three months and I hope you are doing
fine. As you know, Uncle Bob has passed away and left me a million dollars. I have
struggled with how to use the money. In his will he said that I have to use the money
to help people in need instead of for my own. But there are too many people who
          hope for a helping hand.
When I was a child, Uncle Bob was always by my side and he taught me a
lot of things. He once told me about a philanthropic thing that he would like to do
          – feed the world’s poor. If I were him, I would save the world’s poor by giving them
food. To fulfill my uncle’s goal, I have written a proposal on how to use the money
to thoroughly feed the world’s poor, spending a total of eight hundred thousand
dollars. I will first donate some money to charity organisations. It is the most direct
way to help the poor around the world, like in North Africa and Afghanistan. Such
charity organisations often provide food for the needy. When they can stop worrying
about daily necessities, they will be able to do their job. Having a stable job can help
them make a living. It also helps to rebuild society. If I were Uncle Bob, I would be
          satisfied with the plan.
However, to help them get out of poverty, I can’t just give them food. The longer
they get free food, the more they rely on these handouts. Agricultural programmes
will be provided to teach them basic farming techniques and organic farming
methods. I will send technicians to teach them how to use the tools and to carry
out analysis on the soil. Alternative techniques, like organic farming, can also help
to feed them in a healthier way. No machines or chemical methods will be used. To
help them get out of poverty, we should give tools but not just food. The progress
will be slower than giving them food, but will help to better solve the problem.
The last two hundred thousand dollars will be used to fund a project that is
really meaningful to me. It’s related to saving the world’s poor. I want to provide
funds for the poor to have a chance to go to university without worrying about
money. The project will select top students from poor countries and provide them
with a scholarship to study in top university anywhere in the world. Only with
education can they change their destiny.
