After nine hours of flight, we finally arrived in Australia. This is my first trip
abroad so I was excited. As Australia is a native English-speaking country, I was
determined to take this rare opportunity to put into practice what I’ve learned
for many years-English, and on the other hand, try to improve my spoken
English.
At the very beginning, I was quite embarrassed, because I was so shy that
I could not utter a single word in English. Besides, I was afraid of making
grammatical mistakes. However, one day later while we came to live with
our hose family in Dungog, this was no longer the case. To my amazement,
my nervousness disappeared miraculously, and I was able to talk with the
people in my host family. As I see it, this was because my friends didn’t laugh
at me when I made grammatical mistakes. They were so friendly, polite and
enthusiastic. Happy time really flies, and the days in Australia went by in a
flash. When I came back to Hong Kong, I felt the urge to share my experience
in learning English. Be confident and don’t be afraid of making mistakes, as
long as you can convey your message to others, it’s fine to make mistakes.
I would also like to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to my dearest
parents as well as to my dearest teacher for giving me this opportunity to take
part in this program.

This excursion would be the most impressive experience in my life and I will
never forget what I experienced these days.
To begin with, the people I met in Dungog and Sydney were as friendly as what
I’ve imagined them to be. Despite my poor listening skills, they were willing to
repeat their words over and again until I could totally understand. Besides, the
weather in Australia was much better than Hong Kong’s. The blue sky was so
spectacular that I couldn’t believe my eyes.
In addition, the food is also extremely different. For instance, my homestay
family would eat bacon and bread as their breakfast, while I would prefer rice
as my breakfast when I’m at home. As the old saying goes, when in Rome, do
as the Romans do, I’m willing to adapt myself to the local food as well as the
customs.
Apart from the different culture and different lifestyle I perceived in
Australia, I also learned some dialects from my homestay family. In fact, their
pronunciation for some English words is a little bit different from American
and British. This special experience did help to enrich my knowledge about the
English language, and widen my horizon.
On the whole, this trip to Australia is absolutely worth the time and money
I spent. If I can afford a second trip to Australia, I will go there without
hesitation. In my lifetime, I hope that I can travel to different places as many as
I can so as to explore this interesting world.
