I’ve been eagerly looking forward to this excursion to Australia ever since I
learned that I could go. I really wanted to experience a different culture and
lifestyle. I have to say that I had an unforgettable experience!
On the first day in Sydney, I visited the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Tower,
Lunar Park and other tourist attractions. I learned so many interesting facts
about Australia. To name a few, in Sydney, the air quality is genuinely good.
Compared with Sydney, Hong Kong’s air pollution is so serious that we have to
take actions to resolve it. Still, although it was cold at night in Sydney, I saw
many people wearing a T-shirt and shorts, which really surprised me. Maybe
this is because the local people have already got used to that kind of weather.
After the tour around Sydney City, we took the train to Dungog where we
met our homestay family. I lived in the homestay family together with my
classmate James. I felt a little bit embarrassed at first, but soon afterward I
started to feel at home. As a matter of fact, I’m missing my homestay family
very much now. The parents of the homestay family treated us so nicely. They
cooked noodles for us since we told them that we would like to eat noodles.
They took good care of us like our own parents. They have four kids, Grace,
Hayley, Blade, and Zane, and all of them are easygoing and enthusiastic.
They showed us around their neighborhood and taught us games that they
usually play and chatted with us patiently. I had a great time with them.
Besides, the family has several dogs and cats with which they can play freely.
I liked the baby dog most because it is very cute. Their dietary culture is also
different from ours. They tend to cram everything edible into the lunch box,
such as snacks, leftovers from the previous night, and fruits. They usually
don’t eat rice and noodles; in fact, they even don’t know how to cook noodles.
I had an amazing experience in Dungog’s high school too. Despite the
fact that it was a long ride from home to school, the time we spent at
school was absolutely wonderful. I had classes with my buddy, Hayley.
I tried a novel study environment. At the local schools, students didn’t
have so much homework to do at home. Their learning atmosphere was
relaxed, and the boys seemed to be sporty. The students were friendly
too. They were so enthusiastic about introducing their school to me, and
they also asked me many questions they were interested in. It was really
enjoyable for a student to go to a school like this, and I really hope that
Hong Kong schools can learn from it and relieve the pressures on students.

I really miss the homestay family and Dungog High School. I will never forget
this experience in Australia. It serves as a window through which I’ve tried
different living and learning styles away from Hong Kong, opened up my
horizon, and learned to see the world from a new perspective.
