than it used to be. If we choose to develop housing or commercial projects at the
harbourfront, its lustre will be further diminished. The development would also
exacerbate the wall effect at the already high-density area, leading to poorer air
quality and worsened heat island effect. Besides, further commercial development
will put nearby roads and other infrastructure under even more strain, causing traffic
congestion along with other city problems.
Moreover, if we want our city
to be recognised as a world-class
city, having just economic success
is not enough. An ever-growing
concrete jungle is not what we
need, nor a welcome way to show
the best of our city to the world. To
sustain a healthy development of
our harbour, it is important for us to keep it open to the public and tourists, instead
of building even more towering structures along the harbourside. Interaction with
the harbour should be encouraged, allowing it to carry on acting as Hong Kong’s
beating pulse, and pushing the city to become whole while striving for sustainable
development. This is how this city can utilise our harbour better and exhibit to the
globe that this city follows its vision and makes a responsible decision for the good
of future generations.
Due to the reasons above, I believe
it is right to put long term interests first
before short term prospects. We do not
need yet another skyscraper shadowing
the harbour, but instead should keep
our harbour pristine. Developing it as an
open space fits our harbour’s future and
benefits the city as a whole. Help our
harbourfront become the crown jewel of
Hong Kong.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong
