On the story itself, I felt the idea of having a group of boys on an island with
the added violence by Jack was very exciting. Personally, I really like survival and
adventure stories, and it sounds very fun with just kids in the story. The plot was
well-written and very creative, and the pace of the book is suitable too. The most
wonderful thing about the story is that it draws you into it. It is indeed very realistic
and you would feel like you were also on the island with those boys as you read
on. The story is told from the third-person perspective, and you will slowly immerse
in the story and think that you are telling the story based on what you see. It was
amazing!
One of the weaknesses, for me, was that the book was a bit difficult to read
as there were lots of words that were not in my vocabulary and the story was
not straight-forwardly told but with lots of twists. Overall, while I believe I am not
proficient enough to read this book at my present level of language proficiency, I
will definitely reread the book later since I would like to understand more about this
interesting story.
After reading the book, it made me reflect on myself and our society. No matter
when, human beings won’t be perfect, as everyone is capable of being evil and
it is only society’s rules that keep most individuals from acting on their impulses.
Consequently, human beings must have rules, authority and government in order to
maintain a safe and harmonious environment. Moreover, fear of either the known or
the unknown, is the source of violence and the destruction of civil societies. These
are the things Sir Golding wanted to tell us — the hidden message of the story.
I would recommend this book to everyone who likes an exciting, adventurous
and allegorical story. But a certain reading level is required to fully understand the
story. Nevertheless, it is a great book. I love how the author presents his thoughts
throughout the story the most.
