Book Report: Lord Of The Flies

                                                  4D Chloe Chan Jing Tong

I have recently read a book that interested
me a lot. Therefore, I decided to review the
book for my appreciation. In order to prepare
this book report, I used the Internet to do
a search about the author. I also asked my
parents for further information about the book.
Lord of the Flies was written by William
Golding, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature
in 1954. William Golding has written a lot of
novels and poetry. Lord of the Flies is the most
notable among all his works. Sir William Gerald
Golding received the Nobel Prize after he had
written Lord of the Flies. The other famous
works by William Golding are The Double
Tongue and To The Ends of the Earth, which
                                       also received several prizes.
Sir William Gerald Golding was born in 1911 in England. Surprisingly, Lord
of the Flies was his first novel and it immediately became a big hit then. Lord of
the Flies is an allegorical novel which narrates the story of a group of British boys
trapped on an uninhabited island who try to govern themselves with disastrous
results. William Golding died in 1993 leaving only the draft of The Double Tongue.
Many of his novels have been adapted into movies since then.
Lord of the Flies is 260 pages long and is published by Faber and Faber. The
original book cover was illustrated by Anthony Gross.
The title of the novel, Lord of the Flies, has a significant meaning. ‘Flies’ refers
to Beelzebub, another name for the devil. Throughout the novel, the group of lost
British boys grow dirtier and dirtier, losing their sense of civility. It is an outward
reflection of their inner state, which reflects the moral decay of society. As their
savagery and evil-doings increase, they seek a symbol — a god to worship.
