Volunteer! Make A Difference!
5A Sam Chau Sing
I have read a newspaper report saying that Hong Kong teenagers are not
interested in taking part in charity work. The report claims that volunteering has
gone out of fashion as teens are only interested in working when there are financial
rewards. This situation is not good for our society.
Nowadays, most Hong Kong teenagers are
selfish. They will only think about themselves. If
we ask them to join charity work, most of them
will say ‘Oh! Sorry. I need to study’, ‘I’m busy’,
or ‘it’s wasting my time’. They will use many
different excuses to say no. In fact, they do
have the time to do charity work, but they would
rather spend it taking a rest, playing computer
games or hanging out with friends. This shows
how lazy and selfish some teenagers in Hong
Kong can be.
Another reason teenagers in Hong Kong are not interested in doing volunteer
work is that they do not have much information about what kind of charity work
they can do. Flag Day is probably the only kind of charity work they know. They
may think that they are only students and there are not many things they can do.
Moreover, they do not know in what ways they can help even though they want to
take part in volunteering.
The third reason is a lack of familial support.
Many parents in Hong Kong think that studying
is the most important thing for their children. It
is not important for them to take part in charity
work. Some of them may even think that doing
charity work is a waste of their children’s time.
Therefore, they will not encourage teenagers to
participate in charity work.
