Nowadays, many people buy pets as gifts.
They treated them like goods and do not consider
the detrimental results of this small act. From my
point of view, buying pets as gifts is absolutely not
a good idea. Recently, I have visited the Adopt-
a-Pet Centre of the League for Animal Protection
(LAP) and discovered that many pets bought as
gifts are often abandoned by their owners. It is
a common problem and the situation is getting
worse. Therefore, I would like to discuss the disadvantages of buying pets as gifts
and things that should be considered before buying or
adopting a pet.

A good pet owner doesn’t only mean treating the pets
well; you have to care for and love your pets from the
bottom of your heart. If you are a cold-hearted person,
you are not even qualified to adopt a pet. I understand
that people who buy pets as gifts may not be ‘guilty’,
but many of them do not think twice before making the
purchase. Many buyers never bother to ask whether
the person receiving the gift is able or willing to be a pet owner. It is certainly
possible that new owners treat it well and give it a lot of love. However, some
unsuspecting new owners may mistreat their pets if they do not know how to take
care of them. The most common mistake people make is feeding their pet human
food, which can cause serious illnesses. In some unlucky cases, the new owner
may treat the pet badly like beating or torturing them. The end result is the ‘gift’ is
sent to a pet adoption centre like LAP or abandoned in the street. As you can see,
giving pets as gifts without serious consideration is not a great idea at all!
Another thing that buyers of gift pets neglect is taking into account the likings
of his or her receiver. Although lots of pets are adorable, there are still people that
dislike or are allergic to some kinds of animals. Take dogs as an example – some
