                                Stress Levels –

An Alarming Issue We Should Stress!

                                                  6D Alvin Yau Kwong Ming

According to research by the University of Hong Kong, over fifty percent of the
secondary school pupils claim that they are suffering insurmountable pressure and
are not leading a happy school life. In fact, this staggering figure reveals the exact
circumstances of our schoolmates, in particular the senior form students. What are
the reasons behind the enormous pressure they are encountering?
To commence with, pressure arises due to the frequent
examinations students have to cope with. A multitude of
pupils in our school puts much emphasis on academic results,
most of whom always cram till mid-night in hopes of getting
a higher score in the assessments. Going to cram schools,
finishing the assignments and doing revision for the tests
are the daily routine of most of our schoolmate. Students,
consequently, are in need of high-quality sleep and thus their
stress level accumulates, resulting in mental illnesses. Worse still, some do not get
adequate exercise and their mental illnesses can in no way be wrestled with.
Apart from exam pressure, another factor leading to the great pressure faced
by the students is problems with interpersonal relationships. Adolescents are at a
stage where they put a huge emphasis on friendship. Having arguments or being
isolated by peers, teenagers would often feel depressed, not wanted or loved.
Besides, they would not be able to share their sorrow with their closest friends and
thus grow more and more upset. In addition, the poor relationship between parents
and children, due to the overwhelmingly high expectations on the kids, would further
incite quarrels between them contributing to the
high level of stress among students.
Pressure, if not properly relieved, can cause
psychological problems ranging from anxiety to
                                    bi-polar behaviour. Malfunctioning, being unable
to focus on our tasks and falling victims to some
chronic diseases can also be the result. Therefore,
