Origin Of Stress And How To Deal With It

Students in Hong Kong have various kinds and copious amounts of work
every day – classwork, homework, revision, tutorial class exercises, and so on.
Some students, however, are not able to
handle such huge workload on a regular
basis and thus a huge amount of stress is
created. If high levels of unwanted stress
are not properly managed or relieved, their
health and sense of well-being can suffer. In
serious cases, it may even put their lives at
risk.
A recent survey conducted by the
Student Union in our school shows that 70%
of our students suffer from stress. It can be
seen that stress has become a severe and yet common problem among students
in our school. The reason behind this epidemic is obvious – excessive work.
Students, especially those in senior forms, are urgently preparing for the HKDSE.
As numerous tests and exercises need to be done within a certain period of time, it
is highly stressful and is one major source of their stress.
Learning at school is also one of the origins
of stress for many students. As the secondary
school curriculum can be quite complex and
constrained, many students cannot absorb the
concepts, knowledge and skills as they are being
taught rapidly. Weaker students may find that
they cannot withstand the heavy mental load
and often lag behind while some just give up. As
a result, excessive stress is built up when they
cannot perform well in tests and exams.
Another cause of stress for students is the social and emotional problems
encountered during adolescence. Most teenagers have concerns about being
