Letter: Should Girls Play Football?
4B Henry Li Ho Cheung
Hey Jenny,
I can see that your obsession with football is not appreciated by your parents.
Here are my suggestions for you to try to persuade them.
Your parent’s first reason for rejecting
football is that it interferes with your schoolwork.
To your parents, it seems that schoolwork is
of incomparable importance, especially when
compared to a sport that requires constant
practice. However, the question is – did your
favourite sport activity affect your grades? Did
your school results drop significantly because
of playing football? Try to prove to your parents
that the answers to these questions are ‘No!’
If football does not have a significant impact
on your studies, I believe it is still a good way for you to relax and improve your
physique.
The second reason your parents ignore football is that it is not a sport for girls,
and it is ‘inappropriate’, according to what you said in your letter. I highly disagree
with this. It is true that football is almost exclusively played by men, yet this does not
mean that the female minority of football players should be ignored. There is nothing
wrong with girls playing football – it is an exciting sport, not a dangerous activity.
I can’t emphasise the importance of your
presence in the football team. It is widely
accepted that you are the star player of our
school team. You are the team captain, and
an idol of many aspiring sportspersons in our
school. Please tell your parents that losing
the best captain our school has ever seen is
catastrophic to our school’s sporting culture. Our
school has a strong sports culture and has won
